Song Notes
About Decomposure's Song Notes | 2010.05.27 |
Writing long, unnecessarily-detailed song notes was a little tradition of mine stretching back to the days before i took on 'Decomposure' as an alias. After completing a project, i'd take a few months to sit down and unpack the full path of the album's creation and sketch the processes, lessons and new questions that arose. There's a number of reasons for doing them, many of which are overdiscussed elsewhere (or in the subtext, like that i'm overcompensating for a core lack of musical intelligence by attempting to coast on forced humour and moderate self-awareness).
i stopped doing them for awhile after Vertical Lines A. i'm still not entirely sure why i stopped, though i have my theories, ie. a general state of burnt-out overextension, feeling uncomfortable talking about the lyrics and their often-personal content, the slow creep of work into my free time, or despondence over the world's near-universal decision to ignore two years of obsessive work. Regardless of why, i did stop. In fact, i kind of stopped writing entirely (aside from songs) for a good long while. i just couldn't stand the thought of it - i'd look at an empty screen and feel this mild sleepy dread cover the inside of my eyes with dry cotton, and then i'd close the window and go back to work.
But that's had some time to heal (a development you may partially credit to/blame on Twitter), so recent albums have shown a marked increase in the text-to-running-time ratio. Lately, i'm even rediscovering the desire to blog again, though i'm not sure if that's actually a good thing. Anyway, introduction to song notes... done.
